Day 1 Pinnawala / Ayurvedic gardens
The tour starts early in the morning. You should take breakfast packs with you or you can refresh yourself on the way at local bars and restaurants. The first item on the program will be a visit to the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala. There will be time to watch the elephants being fed milk and to take part (optionally) in the feeding of an adult elephant. This is an opportunity to take interesting photos, as the giant mammal is given pieces of fruit directly into its mouth, gently placing them on its pink tongue.
During the visit, we will also see the elephants crossing to a watering hole, the nearby Ma oya stream. There, the elephants take their daily bath, and the young ones have fun while bathing, engaging in endless and amusing arguments, trunk fights, and wrestling.
The center also has a free range for elephants, where the only border between humans and giants are stone boulders.
In total, there are about 80 individuals of Elephas maximus maximus of various ages and sexes in the center. The center plays an important role in research on these largest land mammals on earth, in particular it contributes to reproduction, which later results in an increase in the number of individuals living in Sri Lanka. It is the largest center of this type on Earth. It is worth taking a closer look and assessing the daily rigor and actions of the staff rather than relying on the often contradictory opinions of Internet users.
After visiting Pinnawala, we will continue our journey to the Ayurvedic gardens. Ayurveda came to Sri Lanka from India and is now a science recorded in Ayurvedic scriptures. Along with the Ayurvedic system of medicine, a trend of folk medicine emerged in Sri Lanka.
Both of them intertwine in everyday practice, often solving problems that are impossible to solve from the point of view of conventional medicine. A visit to the gardens will allow you to observe the multitude of flora available in Sri Lanka and the ways in which it is used for healing. During a walk through the gardens, you will be able to see how pepper, coffee, cinnamon, cardamom, cocoa, turmeric, vanilla, nutmeg, etc. grow. You will be able to learn how individual plants affect our body and try a demonstration massage of the arms or legs using Siddartha oil. After visiting the gardens, we will go to Kandy for lunch to continue our route through the tea plantations to the Ramboda Falls, our overnight stay.
Ramboda Falls
Day 2 Ramboda Falls
The Ramboda Falls Hotel is located right across from the falls. There is a short trail to the place where the water enters the basin at the bottom of the falls. There is a small viewing platform there. A longer trail leads through the valley and river to another branch of the Ramboda Falls.
Among the plantations and crops there is a path that can be used to reach the foot of the waterfall, or if not, at least to its surroundings. Another attraction is a swim in a natural pool in another part of the waterfall. However, for the active, a real treat will be a real jungle climb to the top of the Ramboda Falls. The route along the waterfall will be made more attractive by bathing spots, where mainly locals gather during trips around the country, or wonderful scenery where young couples, accompanied by photographers, assistants and drones, have the opportunity to take the most beautiful wedding photos.
The further up you go, the more human presence is replaced by monkeys – macaques, living in gangs around the waterfalls. There are plenty of them everywhere and it’s easy to come into close contact with them.
During the hike to the top, you will have to go through a small cave to reach the top, where there is a viewing platform where you can peacefully observe the beauty of nature. After finishing the climb combined with a swim in the crisp waters of Ramboda, we will go to the tea factory, where you will be able to follow the production process of one of the most popular drinks in the world – tea. There will be time for tasting different varieties of Ceylon tea as well as the opportunity to buy freshly picked from the plantation products of the most exquisite high grown tea BOP, BOPF, OP, FP or green, gold white or silver.
Kandy, where we will visit the Buddha’s Tooth Temple – Sri Dalada Maligawa. Depending on the time, we will be able to participate in giving rituals called pudzia or visit the facility in peace and see the unmummified elephant Raja, which carried the Buddha’s Tooth during religious processions that still take place in Kandy at the turn of July and August, called Esala Perahera. During our visit to Kandy, we will also visit the temples of Hindu gods and goddesses located in the immediate vicinity of the Temple of the Buddha’s Tooth Relic. We will see the temples of the goddess Pattini, the god Natta and Gamidar. You will be able to observe everyday religious activities in this temple complex, the most popular among Buddhist followers on the island.
From the temple we will go to the botanical gardens, but there will be time for shopping on the way. In Kandy it is worth looking around for sapphires, rubies and other gemstones. There are numerous polishing and jewelry factories processing stones purchased from the stone mines in Rathnapura. In Kandy you can also visit factories producing batiks – fabrics dyed using the waxing method. Sculpture workshops or outlets selling branded clothing from Sri Lankan sewing factories at great prices are also on the program of the tour.
At the end of the day we will go to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradenia, where a garden was established in the 14th century in the 14th century and modified to its current form in 1821 by the British. In the park you will find impressive giant bamboos, twisted araucarias, palmier palms, plumed palms, wanderer palms, billionaire palms and others. Twisted fig trees, laburnum waterfalls, Guiana springs with beautiful-smelling flowers but poisonous fruits in the shape of cannonballs or great gloriose, countless orchids and cocaine are examples of the flora of botanical gardens.
After sightseeing, we will return to the hotel.
